SINGAPORE, 22 NOVEMBER 2016: Queensway Secondary School (Secondary Schools ‘C’ Division category) and Loyang Primary School (Primary Schools Junior Division and Senior Division categories) dazzled their opponents to emerge champions of the second edition of the H-TWO-O Ultimate Challenge Cup. This came after two consecutive days of intense but friendly competition at Jalan Besar Stadium.

The matches at the tournament were organised in eight-a-side format matches for the ‘C’ Division category, and five-a-side format matches for both the Junior and Senior Divisions of the primary school categories. This is in accordance with the Football Association of Singapore’s (FAS) football development philosophy in developing the technical abilities of the young players. The two-day event saw more than 490 participants from a total of 39 schools pit their skills against one another to battle for the cup, with all participants greatly enjoying themselves playing their favourite sport during their school holidays.

The H-TWO-O Ultimate Challenge Cup was organised as part of the Football Association of Singapore’s (FAS) and YEO’S youth development initiatives to give school football teams an avenue to sharpen their footballing skills and play quality matches with their peers. In addition, the competition allowed participants to bond and build rapport among the youth football community.

“It was heartening to see such fantastic enthusiasm from the school children. The programme not only allowed the players to hone their skills, but also encouraged fair play, team spirit, and educated them on the importance of hydration during active sports. More often than not, we see youths experiencing fatigue at half-time due to dehydration, and that is because they have yet to have cultivate the habit of consuming isotonic drinks before taking part in physically demanding activities. We hope to achieve holistic player development with programmes like this and hopefully inspire these youths to grow into the next talent pool for Singapore football,” said Ms May Ngiam, 1st Vice-President for Marketing, YHS (Singapore) Pte Ltd.

Head Coach of Tanjong Katong Secondary School Azahari Aza echoed similar sentiments, as he highlighted the benefits that this tournament has brought to its participants.

“Having the opportunity to play football in games of different formats – seven-a-side, eight-a-side – always benefits the students in terms of exposure, honing their tactical awareness and developing their technical abilities. This tournament has certainly helped to prepare the team for the school tournament next year and we have seen that the boys have grown in stature, confidence, and have built stronger bonds with one another. I’d like to thank the FAS for organising this tournament, and for all the development work they do at the grassroots level.”
