RIYADH, 10 JUNE 2021 – Shakir Hamzah has withdrawn from the Singapore Men’s National Team, citing pressing personal commitments that require immediate attention.

The defender’s departure means he will not play any part in the team’s final FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ and Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup China 2023™ qualifying match against Saudi Arabia on Friday, 11 June 2021.

National Team Coach Tatsuma Yoshida said: “I am extremely disappointed that Shakir has made this decision during a time when everyone else in the team is pulling together as one for this Friday’s match.

“It is an unnecessary distraction that we will have to set aside and deal with once we have returned to Singapore. As the Coach, I will focus my attention on adapting my plans for our opponents without him. His absence means there is an opportunity for the players who are with us to step up and fill the void, and I have every confidence that they will.”

The Lions’ remaining Group D match will be held in the centralised venue of Saudi Arabia and will be broadcast LIVE on Mediacorp’s Channel 5 and meWATCH platforms.
