Singapore Selection Defeated at 2018 Sultan of Selangor’s Cup
SINGAPORE, 26 AUGUST 2018: The Singapore Selection were edged on penalties by the Selangor Selection in the 17th edition of The Sultan of Selangor’s Cup on Saturday night after the match ended 1-1 in regulation time.
Thirty eight busloads of Singaporean fans travelled to Shah Alam to watch the match, which was graced by His Royal Highness Tengku Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj, The Sultan of Selangor.
Faris Ramli, the Singapore winger playing for PKNS FC this year, scored the winning penalty to help the home side win 5-3 in the shootout and ruin the visitors’ hopes of a third consecutive triumph.
Albirex Niigata FC (S) striker Shuhei Hoshino scored the opening goal on nine minutes, but the hosts hit back on 16 minutes through Rufino Segovia. Balestier Khalsa FC goalkeeper Zaiful Nizam starred in goal with some fine saves, while Warriors FC defender Kento Fukuda marshalled the back-line well. The match ended 1-1, leaving the winner to be decided on spot-kicks.
The trophy win is Selangor’s ninth, taking them one ahead of Singapore in the all-time trophy count.
Before the main event, the crowd was entertained by a 40-minute long Veterans clash. The game finished 1-1, with Karim Pin’s penalty on 17 minutes cancelled out by Steven Tan’s spot-kick on 27 minutes. Selangor won 3-2 on penalties to win the title outright for the eighth time.
In the Selangor-Singapore Schools Challenge Cup played before the Veterans’ match, the Singapore Under-16 Selection went down 2-0 to their counterparts. Iqmal Hazim broke the deadlock on 19 minutes, before Fariz Zhafor added the second on 21 minutes during the 70-minute match.
