Singapore Selection Win The Sultan Of Selangor’s Cup

SINGAPORE, 7 MAY 2016: The Singapore Selection today lifted The Sultan of Selangor’s Cup for the first time since 2011 by beating Selangor Selection 4-3 through a penalty shootout after the score was tied 1-1 at full-time. In the curtain raiser match, the Selangor Veterans triumphed 2-0 to edge the series with five victories compared to Singapore Veterans’ four. The other five matches were drawn.

Some 34 buses of Singapore football fans travelled up to the Shah Alam Stadium to witness a dazzling fireworks display and concert before seeing veteran players from both sides of the Causeway roll back the years in the Veterans match.

In the main match, the Selangor Selection took the lead through R. Gopinathan’s opener in the 17th minute before Stanely Ng scored the equalizer for the Singapore Selection in the 77th minute. With the scores tied at 1-1 at full-time, the winner was to be decided through penalties. Geylang International custodian Syazwan Buhari was the hero of the night, saving two spot-kicks to give Singapore Selection a 4-3 victory.
