Singapore set off for AFF Under-18 Women’s Championship
SINGAPORE, 19 JULY 2022 – The Singapore Women’s Under-18 National Team departed for Palembang, Indonesia earlier today to compete in the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Under-18 Women’s Championship.
The inaugural edition, to be held from 22 July to 4 August, will involve nine countries. Singapore have been drawn into Group A with Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia and are due to kick off their group stage campaign against the hosts.
Head Coach Chris Yip-Au has named a 25-player squad, who were selected via the identification trials held by the Football Association of Singapore in April this year, as well as from teams playing in the Deloitte Women’s Premier League (WPL). The players then began intensive training and participated in the UEFA Assist Under-17 Girls Competition in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia two months ago as part of their preparations.
Four players named in the squad are already full-fledged Lionesses: midfielder Summer Chong, along with defenders Dhaniyah Qasimah, Siti Nurerwadah Erwan and Nurhidayu Naszri. A handful also have experience from competing in this season’s WPL: Erlysha Qistina Khairil, Nur Adrianna Hazeri, Nur Insyiarah Intikhab Perwaz, Farah Nurzahirah Abdul Fattah (Tanjong Pagar United), Nur Sarah Zu’rishqa Zul’kepli (Albirex Niigata (S)), Dhaniyah (Hougang United), as well as Nasriah Ibrahim and Nurerwadah (Balestier Khalsa).
Yip-Au said: “The return of the WPL has been beneficial to the development of our players, who get important playing minutes. We are also building on our momentum from our stint in Mongolia, where we were able to identify gaps within the team. The experience at the AFF Championship will be a boost for the team’s development as we take on top sides like Vietnam and Thailand.”
