SINGAPORE, 30 SEPTEMBER 2022 – The Singapore Under-16 National Team comprising of 23 players will head to Dhaka, Bangladesh on Sunday, 2 October 2022 for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-17 Asian Cup Qualifiers.
The team will begin their Group E campaign against host Bangladesh on Wednesday, 5 October 2022, with Bhutan and Yemen making up the rest of the oppositions in the group. All of Singapore’s matches will be played at the Bir Shrestha Shaheed Shipahi Mohammad Mustofa Kamal Stadium.
Initially comprising of a group of 30 players, the U-16s have been training five times a week since 22 August 2022 to prepare for the campaign.
The players also had the opportunity to participate in four friendly games, where they were able to gain valuable match experience against the likes of the Albirex Niigata (S) U-19, Hougang United U-21, Tanjong Pagar United U-21 and Malaysia U-16 teams.
As the qualifiers will coincide with the ‘O’ and ‘N’ Level examination period, 10 new players – nine of them are currently in Secondary 3 – have been selected and will be representing Singapore for the first time in any age-group tournament.
Head Coach Angel Toledano said: “The players have shown tremendous commitment and professionalism in preparation for the qualifiers. We have worked hard on certain areas such as defensive organisation and offensive transitions to be as competitive as possible in our three matches.
“The selected boys who were part of the team in Indonesia have matured and I am pleased with their development. Unfortunately, the rest of team were ineligible for selection as they will be doing their national school examinations. As a result, we have a unique situation where the bulk of the team will consists of 15 year olds – one year younger than the competition age group.
“Having said that, these players realise they have been given a special opportunity and I am happy for them. Taking part in such international competitions will push them to improve their mentality, decision making and footballing maturity. While I believe the team has shown some level of progression in these last few months, this competition may come at a less than ideal time for our players as it would still take more training time and games to keep improving and progressing together as a team.”
The AFC Under-17 Asian Cup is a biennial tournament and also serves as a qualification tournament for the FIFA U-17 World Cup. The tournament will resume for the first time since 2018, with Japan the reigning defending champions.
