SINGAPORE, 27 JUNE 2022 – The Singapore Under-16 National Team comprising of 26 players will head to Yogyakarta, Indonesia tomorrow for the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Under-16 Boys Championship 2022.

The team will begin their Group A campaign against Vietnam on 31 July 2022 at the Sultan Agung Bantul Stadium and will be led by Head Coach Angel Toledano, a Spaniard appointed under the Unleash The Roar! Initiative. The young Cubs’ will also face host Indonesia on Wednesday, 3 August 2022 at the Maguwoharjo Sleman Stadium in their second match before taking on Philippines in its last group stage match in the same venue as its opening match. This will be the first time that the players are playing international football since the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak in 2020.

Initially comprising of a group of 37 players, the U-16s have been training four times a week since June 2022 to prepare for the tournament. As part of their preparations, the team also played friendly games, including against the teams of Tampines Rovers U17, Malaysian side Johor Darul Ta’zim FC U16 and Geylang International U17. The final squad of 26 players was selected on Monday, 25 July 2022 ahead of the team’s departure tomorrow.

Head Coach Toledano will be assisted by Coach Miur Rafik, a full-time coach at the Singapore Sports School, both of whom who have been involved in the selection and preparatory phase of the team since June 2022. A UEFA Pro Licence holder, Toledano’s previous coaching stints include Barcelona’s famed youth academy La Masia, China’s U23 team and the now dissolved Chinese side Tianjin Tianhai FC. Most recently, he was the assistant coach of the China U16 team.

Toledano said: “The players and backroom staff have been working hard since we gathered in June to get the players back up to speed after the pandemic and to lay down the foundations for how the technical department wants them to play. This competition will be a great opportunity for the players to apply what they have learnt so far and for my staff and I to identify the areas we need to work further, ahead of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) qualifiers in October later this year.

“The boys have showed good attitude and willingness to learn, but we must also acknowledge that the lack of competitive action for the past two years may have an effect on aspects like their match fitness and decision making. Having said that, this competition is crucial for both their individual and team development in the long run, especially with their next test coming up in October for the AFC qualifiers.”

The AFF Under-16 Boys Championship 2022 will be the 15th edition and this will be the 10th time Singapore is participating in the competition.
