Singapore squad announced for FAS Tri-Nations Series 2022
26 players, including two maiden call-ups, in Lions team to face Malaysia and Philippines in friendlies on 26 and 29 March respectively
SINGAPORE, 17 MARCH 2022 – Singapore Men’s National Team Coach Nazri Nasir today named a squad of 26 players for next week’s FIFA international window.
The 51-year-old, who will helm the Lions on an interim basis, will prepare them to face Malaysia and the Philippines on 26 March and 29 March respectively as part of the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) Tri-Nations Series 2022. Both international ‘A’ friendly matches will be played at the National Stadium, Singapore Sports Hub and kick off at 8pm.
Two players have earned their first senior call-ups – Tampines Rovers defender Ryaan Sanizal, 19, and Young Lions midfielder Shah Shahiran, 22. Uncapped Tampines Rovers attacker Taufik Suparno, 26, has been called up for only the second time; his first time was more than six years ago, in November 2015.
The Lions are scheduled to gather for centralised training starting 21 March, Monday. The upcoming matches will be the Lions’ first international outings since the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup 2020 last December. Tickets will go on sale on Friday, 18 March 2022, at 10am on fas.org.sg/tickets.
Coach Nazri said: “Shah has done well for the Young Lions and at Under-23 level, and I was impressed with his performances at last month’s ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) U23 Championship in Cambodia. He showed that he could cope with the high intensity and pressure, and he has also matured as a player and person. Similarly, Ryaan has put in solid displays for Tampines last season and continued his good form this year, and he will provide good options for us in defence. I believe in giving young players opportunities and both of them have earned theirs, and it will be beneficial to their development to train with the senior players.
“The same goes for Taufik and Christopher, whose form at club level in recent times mean that they deserve to be in this team.
“In terms of our approach, I will be looking to build on what Coach Tatsuma Yoshida has put in place. I will maintain an attacking style of football and this squad was chosen with that in mind. We will not sit back and while expectations will be high because we are playing at home, we want to get results during these two matches.
“Of course, we hope that our fans will come out in full force – especially with the increased capacity limit of 15,000 – and cheer us on. I am honoured to be able to lead the team again and I will do all I can do help our boys perform to their best.”
Ryaan, who has represented Singapore at Under-15 to Under-23 level, said: “It is every kid’s dream to be playing for the senior team and while the call-up comes as a surprise, I have been putting in plenty of effort at club level and it is a reward for me. This will also motivate me further to keep my head down and work even harder. I am looking forward to joining the team and going in to give my best, learn from the rest and show what I can do.”
