SINGAPORE, 1 AUGUST 2018: Ahead of The Sultan of Selangor’s Cup 2018 taking place on 25 August, fans from various fan groups were presented tickets to the annual affair by Guest-of-Honour Tan Sri Dato’ Abd Karim Munisar, Chairman and Team Manager, The Sultan of Selangor’s Cup. The head coach of the Singapore Selection team was also announced to be Home United FC head coach Aidil Sharin.

Mr Teo Hock Seng, Head Delegation of Singapore, The Sultan of Selangor’s Cup, who was at the event, said: “The Sultan of Selangor’s Cup has been a key highlight in our local football calendar since its inception in 2001. With His Royal Highness Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, Sultan of Selangor’s vision and foresight in pushing for this friendly competition, we have been able to continue to keep not only the football rivalry but also the friendship between Singapore and Selangor strong.

“In all that we do, fans are the beating heart of football. They are what brings the game to life and we want to recognise that hence this symbolic gesture from the Selangor delegation to invite Singapore fans to join us in Shah Alam.”

Mr Rosli Bin Md Saleh, a Warriors FC fan and a long-time supporter of The Sultan of Selangor’s Cup, commented: “I am definitely excited for The Sultan of Selangor’s Cup and am looking forward to see exciting matches at Shah Alam Stadium. Together with my family, we will travel up to Selangor to support the three Singapore teams and I hope that they will bring back all three trophies.”

The 17th edition of the Cup will take place at Shah Alam Stadium, Selangor, Malaysia. The yearly event will once again feature the traditional curtain-raiser match between the Veterans, followed by the main match between the Singapore and Selection Selection teams. The Singapore-Selangor Schools Challenge Cup, which was introduced last year, will be competed at the Shah Alam Stadium for the first time by Under-16 boys from both sides.

The squads for The Sultan of Selangor’s Cup 2018 were also announced at the ticket presentation ceremony. Head coach Aidil Sharin has called up 21 players – including four foreign players – from seven Singapore Premier League clubs to the Singapore Selection team.

The Singapore Veterans team features familiar household names such as footballing legends Malek Awab and Fandi Ahmad. The Singapore Under-16 Selection team will be headed by Syed Azmir and comprises boys from various schools.

Tan Sri Dato’ Abd Karim Munisar said: “We are happy to note that The Sultan of Selangor’s Cup has grown in magnitude, as apparent in the increased number of fans in Singapore. This year is exceptionally special as there will be a grand lucky draw to win a Honda City car while tickets remain at RM10.00 only.”
