Singapore to kick off 2018 AFF Suzuki Cup Group Stage campaign against Indonesia
SINGAPORE, 2 MAY 2018: Singapore has been drawn in Group B for the 12th edition of the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup, and will face Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines and either Timor-Leste or Brunei in the group stage.
With the group stage taking place from 8 November to 25 November 2018, Singapore will kick off our AFF Suzuki Cup campaign at home against Indonesia on 9 November 2018.
Group A will see Vietnam, Malaysia, Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos competing to reach the semi-finals. The biennial tournament will conclude on 15 December 2018.
The top two teams in each group will advance to the semi-finals, which will be two-legged and played on a home and away basis.
Football Association of Singapore (FAS) President Mr Lim Kia Tong who was at the draw held today in Jakarta, said: “There are no easy opponents in a prestigious competition like this and we are aware of the uphill task that lies ahead. I believe that with the change in tournament format, the ASEAN nations, together with the excitement generated by fans, will do all they can to put on a great show. Likewise, the FAS will do the same and support the National Team in preparations for the tournament. We look forward to exciting home games with our fans rallying behind the Lions to give them the greatest support.”
National Team captain Hariss Harun added: “This will be a tough fight, with Thailand and Indonesia in our group. We may not be favourites to win the Suzuki Cup but we need to capitalise on our home ground advantage to get a good start in our campaign. I hope that the fans will come down to support us when we play at home. The away games will be tough but in football, anything can happen and I believe that we can achieve a good result in the tournament. We have big ambitions, but we’ve got to stay humble and work really hard because of the quality of the teams we will face.”
