Singapore To Participate In AFF U18 Championship 2017 And AFC U16 Championship 2018 Qualifiers
SINGAPORE, 23 AUGUST 2017: The Football Association of Singapore today announced that the Under-18 National Team will be participating in the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Under-18 Championships 2017 from 2-17 September 2017 in Yangon, Myanmar. In addition, the Under-15 National Team will be participating in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-16 Championship 2018 Qualification from 18-24 September 2017 in Bekasi, Indonesia.
Singapore has been drawn in Group A for the AFF U18 Championship 2017 and will face 2016 runners-up Thailand, Timor Leste, Malaysia, Cambodia and Laos.
Head Coach of the Under-18 National Team Christophe Chaintreuil said: “The boys have had a busy few months in the lead-up to this tournament, playing both Prime League and school matches. As part of our preparations, we also played two friendly matches against the India Under-19s in June, and participated in the Jockey Club International Youth Invitational Football Tournament in March where we finished in second place, behind Thailand. These international matches were a good experience for the team and we will be looking to do our best in this upcoming tournament.”
For the AFC U16 Championship 2018 Qualification, Singapore has been drawn in Group J, alongside Japan, Malaysia and Guam.
Sofiyan Hamid, Head Coach of the Under-15 National Team, said: “The team has been training hard and preparing well for this tournament. It will not be easy playing against Japan, which finished at the top of their group and qualified for the 2016 AFC U16 Championship semi-finals. Nevertheless, we will strive to put on a strong performance and go all out in the three games.”
