Singapore U14 girls fell to neighbours the Philippines 0-6 in the opening tie of the ASEAN U14 Girls Regional Championship. This is the first international tournament for our girls, and the experience of playing against regional sides will be invaluable to their development regardless of the results.

Head Coach Chen Caiying said: “Our girls are naturally feeling down following the defeat to the Philippines, but they have tried their best against a strong team.

“The FIFA Women’s Football rankings show that our ASEAN neighbours are all above us at the moment. We must bear in mind that this is the first time our young girls are competing at this level. Whatever the result, it is good exposure for them, and will aid them in their development.

“The fact that we are participating in this tournament is a positive step forward and shows that FAS is taking a serious approach to women’s football by building up from the youth levels. We are a few years behind our neighbours at the moment, but I believe as long as our girls show the right mentality and continue with their positive attitudes, they will continue to improve from their participation in international competitions.

“We will continue to give of our best for the remainder of this championship and we hope our fellow Singaporeans will get behind our girls in our quest to reach the next level.

“I encourage everyone to post messages of support and encouragement for our girls on Facebook. These will definitely give them a boost in morale.”

Let’s continue to back our girls for the rest of the tournament!
