Singapore U14 Girls Return Home from ASEAN U14 Girls Regional Championship
Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam 13 June 2014: Singapore U14 girls exited the ASEAN U14 Girls Regional Championship on Thursday after being defeated 0-3 by Vietnam, the champions in 2013.
Singapore performed better since their opening day defeat to Group winners the Philippines, and narrowly lost to Cambodia 1-2 on Wednesday. Yesterday’s match against Vietnam was the U14 girls’ third game in 3 days. The U14 girls have never competed at this level before, and experienced playing 3 matches on consecutive days for the first time.
Head Coach Chen Caiying is proud of her players despite the results.
She said: “Our girls may have lost to the group winners the Philippines on the opening day of the competition, but I am proud of the way they picked themselves up for the remaining two matches. They refused to give up on their chances of progressing and continue to give their best efforts in each of the last two matches. This deserves extra credit as they are very tired physically, having never experienced playing at such a high level previously, and in so many games in such a short time.
“I firmly believe the girls have benefited a lot from participating in this tournament, and they can only continue to improve with the right attitude and mentality.
“I would also like to thank the fans for their messages of support to the girls, it certainly lifted their mood and inspired them to continue to give their best on the field.”
