SINGAPORE, 9 SEPTEMBER 2022 – The Singapore Under-19 Men’s National Team comprising of 23 players will head to Dushanbe, Tajikistan tomorrow for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-20 Asian Cup Qualifiers.

The team will begin their Group I campaign against host Tajikistan on 14 September 2022, with Cambodia and Lebanon making up the rest of the oppositions in the group. All of Singapore’s matches will be played at the Republican Central Stadium.

The final squad was trimmed from a provisional squad of 29 players and has been undergoing centralised training since Monday, 29 August 2022. Nine players have been called up to represent Singapore at the Under-19 age group for the first time while the other 14 players took part in the Asean Football Federation U19 Championship 2022 in Jakarta, Indonesia earlier in July. Meanwhile, winger Khairin Nadim has been ruled out of the qualifying campaign after sustaining an injury during training.

Head Coach Fadzuhasny Juraimi said: “This team is stronger physically and mentally, with the selected players getting game time and performing well in the Singapore Premier League (SPL), U-21 League and the Singapore Football League. Players like Aizil Yazid and Raoul Suhaimi have shown good attitude and maturity to play regularly in the SPL while new players like Ajay Robson, Ethan Pinto and Woo Chun Wei have consistently stood out in the U-21 league and we believe they have traits that will improve the overall quality of the team.

“The boys will be tested on several fronts, from the quality of the opponents that we are up against, the long travelling involved and even adapting to a new overseas playing environment which includes adapting quickly to the local climate. Regardless of the results, this experience will be crucial for the players’ development. It is not every day these players will get to play against the likes of Tajiskistan and Lebanon and they must seize this opportunity with both hands by playing boldly and having the mental focus to apply our playing style on the pitch.”

The AFC U-20 Asian Cup will take place in Uzbekistan next year and will be the first to be played as an U-20 tournament. A total of 16 teams will play in the competition, with the top four teams qualifying for the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Indonesia. As the biennial tournament was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Saudi Arabia are the defending champions having won the last edition in 2018.
