SINGAPORE, 29 JUNE 2022 – Singapore Under-19 Men’s National Team Head Coach Fadzuhasny Juraimi today named a final squad of 26 players for the upcoming ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) U-19 Boys Championship 2022. The competition will be the first for most of the players since the coronavirus pandemic started two years ago.
The team will travel to Jakarta, Indonesia tomorrow and begin their Group B campaign against Cambodia on 3 July 2022, with Laos, Malaysia and Timor Leste making up the rest of the oppositions in the group. All of Singapore’s matches will be played at the Madya Senayan Stadium. Forward Muhamad Ali Manaf and goalkeeper Aizil Yazid will only depart for Indonesia on 2 July 2022 after their respective clubs’ Asian Football Confederation Cup campaigns.
The Under-19 players began intensive training together in April this year – the first time they were able to do so in two years due to the restrictions brought about by the coronavirus pandemic. They linked up for another training camp during the last International Federation of Association Football window from 30 May 2022 to 14 June 2022 and had the opportunity to play two behind-closed-doors friendly matches. The players underwent another centralised training from 20 June 2022 before the final selection was made.
The final squad will include Young Lions winger Khairin Nadim, who featured in all four games during the 31st Southeast Asian Games in Vietnam. His club teammate Raoul Suhaimi – the Singapore Premier League’s youngest debutant at 15 years and 232 days – is also in the squad.
Head Coach Fadzu said: “It has been some time since the U19s had the opportunity to play at the international level due to the pandemic and the boys and I are eager to make up for lost time. I am glad this competition is taking place as it will be a great learning experience and exposure for the players at this stage of their careers.
“My backroom staff and I are mindful that many of our players have had lesser training and playing opportunities in the last couple of years compared to our rivals. For this competition, we want the boys to focus on applying our playing style which we have been working on in training and to enjoy themselves on the pitch. We will remain focused and take things one game at a time, give our all in the competition and aim to do Singapore proud.”
Khairin added: “The competition is a good opportunity for my teammates and I to see where we stand compared to our peers from the region and it is important that we use this as a stepping stone for the rest of our respective seasons. We have been working on certain things in training and we need to be unafraid to showcase what we learnt as this will help us to establish ourselves in the U23s and even the National team. The mood in camp is good and we cannot wait to take to the field in Indonesia.”
The AFF Under-19 Championship 2022 will be the 18th edition, and this will be the 13th time Singapore is participating in the competition. The Republic’s best showing was in 2003 when the team finished in third place.
