A final squad of 20 players will look to make their mark in Cambodia

SINGAPORE, 26 APRIL 2023 – Singapore’s Under-22 Men’s National Team head coach Philippe Aw announced a final squad of 20 players for the upcoming Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Cambodia.

The team will depart to Phnom Penh, Cambodia on 28 April 2023 and commence their first match in the Group B fixture against Thailand on 30th April 2023 at Prince Stadium, Cambodia. They will then face off with the remaining countries, Vietnam, Laos and Malaysia. All of Singapore’s matches will be streamed live on Mediacorp’s meWATCH platform.

The final selection was trimmed from a provisional squad of 25 players that had been undergoing centralized training since 17 April 2023. While teams could call up a maximum of three overaged players in previous edition, this year’s tournament will solely be an Under-22 tournament.

There will be some familiar faces in the squad with five players that had featured in the previous year’s SEA Games, including Jordan Emaviwe and team captain Harhys Stewart. Lion City Sailors’ Abdul Rasaq has chalked up five goals in eight games in the on-going domestic Singapore Premier League, and he will be looking to continue his good form on the international stage.

Head coach Philippe Aw said, “The final 20 players were chosen as they had displayed great commitment, hunger and discipline throughout the centralized training. Most importantly, they were also chosen based on our tactics and game plan in mind.

“The boys will be facing four challenging teams in Cambodia, and they are raring to go. I am confident that they will provide a tough challenge for their opponent and continue to push on until the final whistle. Given their attitude they have displayed so far, I know they will be playing with fighting spirit and a never-say-die attitude.

Team captain Harhys Stewart also added, “It is a privilege to don the national jersey and represent our country. All of us understand this and know what is at stake. Anything can happen in football, and we got to believe in ourselves and each other that we can perform and carry out the coach’s plans accordingly in Cambodia.”
