SINGAPORE, 23 November 2013: In the second of a series of warm-up friendlies before the SEA Games, the National Under-23 ‘B’ team took on Cambodia Under-23 ‘B’ team yesterday at Jalan Besar Stadium, with the game finishing 0-1 in favour of the Cambodia Under-23 ‘B’ team.

A solitary goal from Cambodia winger Chan Vathanaka 18 minutes from time proved enough to sink the hosts. After a 1-1 draw against Hougang United on Tuesday evening, Singapore Under-23 coach Aide Iskandar went for a much-changed line-up with a total of 10 changes. Madhu Mohana and Raihan Rahman formed the defensive duo in front of Khairulhin Khalid, Aqhari Abdullah and Anumanthan Mohan Kumar liaised in midfield, while Iqbal Hussain and Fareez Farhan lined upfront in a 4-4-2 formation.

Despite Singapore dominating the first half, the Cambodian keeper was hardly troubled. Three substitutions came after the break in the form of Syazwan Buhari, Shahfiq Ghani and Sahil Suhaimi, and after a couple of chances that went begging for the latter duo, the Cambodians started to assert themselves in the game.

A defensive slip-up by Raihan just outside the box allowed Cambodia’s Sok Pheng to set up Vathanaka who swivelled before firing an unerring shot into the bottom right corner. Singapore tried valiantly to claw their way back into the game but eventually it was the Cambodians who celebrated a stunning upset after the final whistle.

The next match will see the Singapore National team, comprising the members of the National Under-23 team, take on their Cambodian counterparts on 24 November 2013, at 7.30pm at Hougang Stadium.
