SINGAPORE, 15 MAY 2017: The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Grassroots Football Day will be celebrated in Singapore over two weekends with a wide range of activities. The festivities kicked off this past Saturday with five-a-side matches for children and their parents from the Serangoon and Hong Kah Cubs Centres as well as ActiveSG Serangoon at Serangoon Stadium, and will close with the FIFA “Live Your Goals” (LYG) Centre Festivals at Queensway Secondary and Bowen Secondary Schools on 20 and 21 May respectively. The LYG Centre Festivals are free and open for registration.

Over 200 children and parents from the Serangoon, Hong Kah and Sembawang Cubs Centres, ActiveSG Serangoon and Sembawang Primary School participated in the five-a-side games over the weekend, with matches held at Serangoon Stadium on Saturday from 8.00am to 1.00pm, and at Sembawang Primary School on Sunday from 8.00am to 11.00am.

The FIFA LYG Centres at Bowen Secondary and Queensway Secondary Schools will also be holding their quarterly LYG Centre Festivals this weekend, where girls aged six to 15 years old will be grouped into teams to play small-sided games. Interested participants may write in to [email protected] or register on-site 15 minutes before the start of the event. Participants must be attired in sports attire and football boots or running/turf shoes.

“As the base of the football pyramid in Singapore, grassroots football is hugely important to us. We are delighted to be joined by the children in the various centres and their parents this year to mark AFC Grassroots Football Day. We also look forward to welcoming a new batch of coaches into our grassroots football community as they complete their Grassroots Coaching Course later this month. It is the ninth course since we started conducting them in February 2015, and we now have over 200 certified grassroots coaches. There are still another three more courses scheduled for the rest of the year, so it is heartening to see the growing interest in grassroots coaching. In line with our grassroots development philosophy, we will continue our efforts to develop more coaches and reach out to more children via our various centres to grow the grassroots football scene in Singapore,” said Mr Lim Kia Tong, President of the FAS.

Other events planned for the AFC Grassroots Football Day include the FAS Grassroots Coaching Course and the National Primary Schools Football Championship Junior Girls 2017 semi-finals on 17 May, followed by the Third Place Playoff and Final on 19 May.

AFC Grassroots Football Day is celebrated across Asia on 15 May, with a record number of 38 Member Associations participating this year. Grassroots football covers all aspects and segments of football including children, youths, amateurs, veterans, people with learning or physical disabilities and the less-fortunate.
