SINGAPORE, 22 JUNE 2016: The New Paper (TNP) League Cup 2016 draw was held earlier today at the Singapore Press Holdings Auditorium, in the presence of FAS President Zainudin Nordin, S.League CEO Lim Chin, Editor of The New Paper, Dominic Nathan and Sports Editor of The New Paper, Lim Han Ming.

Representatives from the eight participating S.League clubs – Albirex Niigata, Balestier Khalsa, Brunei DPMM, Geylang International, Home United, Hougang United, Tampines Rovers and Warriors FC – was also present at the event. Garena Young Lions will be sitting out of the tournament this year.

“The New Paper is a great supporter of the S.League and we are delighted to have them backing the League Cup as title sponsor for the second year running. TNP League Cup also provides a great platform for the participating clubs to showcase their young talents, and I am looking forward to seeing some exciting football on display this July,” said Mr Lim Chin.

‚ÄúThe New Paper is delighted to be the title sponsor of the League Cup again, after last year’s tournament produced lots of thrills and spills, with 49 goals scored in 15 matches. We are confident the fans will be treated to another football spectacle in this year’s tournament,‚Äù said Mr Lim Han Ming, Sports Editor of The New Paper.

Geylang International coach Hasrin Jailani pledged to give his fringe players some game time in the tournament.

‚ÄúI’m likely to give the players who haven’t played that much a runout. This is a tough group; we will be in the same group as Albirex Niigata again after being drawn against them in the Singapore Cup, but there’s still a good chance for us,‚Äù insisted Hasrin.

On the other hand, Balestier Khalsa coach Marko Kraljevic said he would field strong sides for every game.

‚ÄúWe have done well in this competition, winning it three years ago and reaching the final last season so we hope we will go through (to the semi-finals). Every competition is important to us, so we will be playing our strongest team possible unless we get injuries,” said Marko.

To further increase engagement with the fans, a special TNP League Cup 2016 contest will be introduced this year. Fans will need to guess, in the correct order, the clubs that will finish as champions, runners-up and Plate winner of this year’s League Cup. All correct entries will be entered into a lucky draw, with a top prize of $2,000 and four consolation prizes of $500. More details of the contest will be announced in The New Paper.

The tournament will feature two groups of four teams, and the top two teams of each group will qualify for the Cup semi-finals. The bottom two teams of each group will progress to the Plate semi-final, with the Plate final to be played as a curtain raiser before the Cup final. Match fixtures will be released at a later date.
