SINGAPORE, 30 NOVEMBER 2015: The Under-21 National Team yesterday secured a third-place finish in the Vietnam Youth Newspaper Cup 2015 by beating the Vietnam Youth Newspaper Under-21 side 6-5 on penalties after the scores were tied 1-1 at the end of normal time.
Vietnam had taken the lead in the in the 64th minute through Lam Ti Phong, but 18-year-old midfielder Joshua Pereira – recently named The New Paper Dollah Kassim Award winner – scored a dramatic equaliser in the 90th minute to take the game to penalties.
Goalkeeper Zharfan Rohaizad put on a fine display and was named Man of the Match, helping the young team – the starting XI had an average age of just 19.18 – to claim eventual victory in the 3rd Place Playoff.
“This tournament is very important for this age group, we need to play this kind of tournament. Preparations were difficult because I only had the entire team together for the first time when we arrived in Ho Chi Minh City, so I am very proud of my players for what they have achieved,” said Head Coach, National Youth Teams Richard Tardy.
