Women’s Challenge Cup 2007 Week 4 – United World College extends unbeaten run

Share

United World College (UWC) extended their unbeaten run in the Women’s Football Challenge Cup 2007 to four games with a hard fought win against a determined Paya Lebar Punggol FC, courtesy of two goals from their top scorer, Rebecca Jane Gaughan.

The pitch was slightly sodden due to the incessant rain over the past few days, threatening to disrupt the passing game of both teams. But once the match started, UWC marshalled the terrain superbly, at times displaying quick and precise passes, drawing applause from the appreciative crowd.

With the tireless efforts of custodian Nur Lin Bte Hosairi and the back four, Paya Lebar Punggol FC managed to keep the persistent attacks of UWC at bay for the whole of the first half. The mazy penetrative runs of Umar Dhevi created several openings for Paya Lebar Punggol FC. With better finishing, they could have been rewarded a goal for their splendid build-up.

The second half started with UWC piling on the pressure, determined to get the ball pass Nur Lin Bte Hosairi. Finally, in the 51st minute after a series of neat passes, a pinpoint diagonal cross from the left flank found Rebecca Jane Gaughan free at the edge of the 18-yard box.

The No. 20 brought the ball down expertly and drilled the ball into the back of the net, breaking the stalemate. 14 minutes later, a lapse in Paya Lebar Punggol FC’s defence gifted another goal in favour of UWC, with Rebecca, again, applying the finishing touch.

The scoreline would have been bigger if not for many wasteful attempts at goals from UWC. Nevertheless, it was a spirited performance by Paya Lebar Punggol FC, who now need a good win against Police FC in the last round to stand a chance in the knock-out stages.

Building on the momentum of their good run, UWC endeavours to maintain the winning streak.
