SINGAPORE, 5 MARCH 2017: The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) today launched the new FAS Women’s Football logo at the third annual Women’s Football Day at Kallang Field (former Cricket Ground). Ms Sun Xueling, Member of Parliament (MP) for Pasir Ris-Punggol Group Representation Constituency, was Guest of Honour at the event held in conjunction with International Women’s Day – which falls on 8 March.

Tournaments were also held for the Women’s Open 7-a-side, Girls’ Under-17 and Under-12 5-a-side, Children’s Mixed 5-a-side and Family 3s categories. Around 800 women, girls and children turned up for the event, an increase from last year’s turnout of 550.

Ms Julie Teo, General Manager, Grassroots and Women’s Football commented: “We are delighted to be able to once again organise the Women’s Football Day this year and launch our new FAS Women’s Football logo today. The new logo is a celebration of the growth of women’s football in Singapore, because we have been seeing increasing interest and participation in women’s football in Singapore following the change in landscape over the last two years. I hope that there will be more women and girls picking up the sport, and also greater support for women’s football.”

Ms Sun, accompanied by President of the FAS Provisional Council Mr Lim Kia Tong, launched the new FAS Women’s Football logo midway through the festivities. The logo symbolises the woman footballer and comprises three colours: blue, magenta, and grey. Ms Teo explained: “Blue signifies trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence and truth, hence creating a sense of trust and security. Magenta is not only a feminine representation of women and young girls, but also a representation of compassion and universal spirit. Grey signifies power and sleekness. The three colours come together to portray the renewed image and hope for women’s football.”

Mr Lim Kia Tong added: “We are honoured to have Ms Sun Xueling here today to show her support for women’s football. Through Women’s Football Day, we have been able to reach out to various age-groups and foster their involvement in football, as well as raise the profile of women’s football.

“FAS is always working to develop women’s football through various initiatives such as the Women’s Development Tournament held in February and the revamp of the women’s competition structure this year. The great turnout today is particularly encouraging and we will continue to explore new approaches to further strengthen women’s football in Singapore.”

Said Secondary 4 Methodist Girls’ School student, Valerie Ong, who plays in the Under-19 National Team: “I’m happy to be one of the flag bearers to unveil the FAS Women’s football logo today! I also got to meet and take photographs with Ms Sun Xueling as well as Mr Lim (Kia Tong) earlier. I can feel their passion and desire to keep improving the standards of women’s football and I am confident that we will produce strong teams at the national levels in the coming years.”

Mdm Hamidah Bee Bte Bakar, a parent remarked: “This is the third year in a row my children and I turned up to join hundreds of other women and girls celebrate International Women’s Day through a series of fun-filled activities and this annual event is gaining popularity as evident from the turnouts. I’m deeply appreciative that FAS has been spending a lot of effort on the promotion and development of women’s football in recent years and I hope more sponsors will come forward to invest in this beautiful sport.”
