Women’s National Teams To Play Friendlies In Hong Kong And Thailand
SINGAPORE, 11 MARCH 2017: As part of the Football Association of Singapore’s (FAS) continuing efforts to further develop women’s football in Singapore, it today announced that the Women’s National Team will be playing a friendly against Hong Kong, while the Under-16 Women‚Äôs National Team will have a training camp in Chonburi, Thailand from 13 – 17 March respectively.
The Women’s National Team – with an average age of 22.85 – will be playing against the Hong Kong Women’s National Team at Tseung Kwan O Sports Ground as part of their preparations for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Women’s Asian Cup 2018 Qualifiers in April.
In Chonburi, Thailand, the Under-16 Women’s National Team will be playing three friendly matches during their training camp in preparation for the ASEAN Football Federation Under-15 Girls Championship 2017 in May 2017 and AFC Women’s Under-16 Championship 2019 qualifiers in 2018. The youthful squad has an average age 13.05 years.
Head Coach of the Women’s National Team Yeong Sheau Shyan said: “The Women’s National Team had the opportunity to play against the United Arab Emirates in January, as well as against Bangladesh and Malaysia in last month’s Women’s Development Tournament. These were good experiences for the team, and we are grateful that we could play these matches. This upcoming match against Hong Kong will be another stern test for us as we enter the final phase of preparations for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2018 Qualifiers next month.”
Coach Sheau Shyan, who is also the Head Coach of the Under-16 Women’s National Team added: “For the Under-16s, the training camp will be a good opportunity for them to gain international exposure and band together as a squad. We have deliberately chosen a very young team as we have an eye on the AFC Women’s Under-16 Championships in two years’ time, when most of this squad will still qualify. We are thankful to the FAS for the arrangement of these international games for the women’s teams and look forward to seeing our girls grow through these friendlies.”
