WPL Wk 12: Late Tina equaliser keeps Young Women’s title hopes alive
A late equaliser from the Young Women earned them the point needed to keep up the chase for the Premier League title in a match that could have gone either way if not for some wayward finishing from both teams.
With one game each left to play for the top three teams and only a point difference between them, it will surely be a thrilling three-horse race all the way to the final week of the Championship.
The first threat came in the 13th minute when Young Women centre back Abirami Apbai Naidu sprayed a glorious long pass to pick out forward Chen Yue Gui in the penalty box. The latter managed to bring the ball down but shot just wide.
As Young Women surged forward to find the opening, Norsuria Damsuri was there at the heart of Police’s defence perennially, repelling the Young Women’s attacks with excellent reading of the game and some strong tackling.
Police’s first chance came in the 30th minute when Sara Margareta Gardqvist produced some nimble footwork to evade the attention of her two markers. With space on her right, she fired a fierce shot destined for the bottom right only to be denied by Young Women goalkeeper Erlinawaty Dewi.
It was not long before the Young Women’s defence was breached. An inviting cross from the left into the penalty box found Sara lurking at the far post. The Swede was left with a simple finish to slot the ball home from five metres out.
The intensity stepped up in the second half with both teams in search of maximum points. Tina Afrida Nasmi was brought into the game at half time to add more firepower upfront. Four minutes before the end, the substitution paid off when she beat the offside trap to calmly place the ball pass Noraini for the important equalizer.
The Young Women will need maximum points from their final match against Challenge Cup Champions UWC to keep the title race alive ahead of Saturday’s Premier League crucial cruncher between Bishan Arsenal FC and Police FC at Jalan Besar Stadium.
